The history of afternoon tea complete with scones, jam, clotted cream, finger sandwiches and other tasty confections was born in the 1840s when the Duchess of Bedford request some nibbles to quell the "sinking feeling" she had in the late afternoons. IN other words, the long gap between breakfast and dinner left her feeling quite hungry around 5 in the afternoon. Scones remain a beloved staple of this time-honored tradition.
Gabrielle Jammal, the Tea Sommelier at the Baccarat Hotel in NY, is welcoming Esprit de Baccarat’s Editor into her domain — the Grand Salon where the Afternoon Tea has already become a tradition. While she is advising some guests on their tea selection, she is sitting with us to share her earliest experience of tea, and what makes Afternoon Tea a memory for all.
The weather is perfect to enjoy our Tsar Nicholas II afternoon tea, the newest addition to the Grand Salon tea program that creates an opulent experience for two offered in four-courses. Included among the specialty menu’s inspired offerings are Petrossian caviar, Krug champagne, and vodka-infused blinis.
